Unfortunately, the maintenance and update of security systems and policies are often overlooked due to more pressing day-to-day urgencies. When we hear about a tragic incident in the news, it often makes us stop to think about workplace security. Such an incident occurred late last month in a shooting by an employee in a municipal center in Virginia Beach.
This terrible incident is a reminder that we all need to refresh our security policies and systems so we can prevent tragedies from occurring and keep employees safe.
Five tips to stay on top of your security policies and practices:
- UPDATE POLICIES- Update security policies annually and after major headline events. Assign one person to be accountable. Provide incentives to employees who improve safety and security.
- MAINTENANCE AND TESTING- Security systems should be maintained and tested on a quarterly basis. Organizations that do so can avoid security neglect and corresponding premises liability suits. Ensure broken equipment is replaced, camera angles are not blocked, and equipment with batteries is functioning.
- SECURITY STAKEHOLDER MEETINGS- Security is the responsibility of everyone, but organizations should select key stakeholders to meet on a quarterly basis. It is important that the stakeholders actively engage their respective organizations to identify concerns prior to the security quarterly meeting.
- ONE SIZE MISFITS ALL- When it comes to security, one size does not fit all. A system designed for a small office cannot function properly in a larger one. A security consultant can help you identify the system that is right for your organization through a threat, risk, and vulnerability assessment.
- CRIME TRENDS- Be aware of local crime trends and adapt your security accordingly. Monitor social media to see if there are overly negative criticisms and concerns about your workplace. Being aware can prevent a problem before it happens.
